We took a premium pair apart at the cost level — cotton, fabric, loom, hardware, labor, markup — and added it back up. The surprising part isn't how expensive the good jean is. It's how cheap the cheap one is.

Pick up a $35 pair of jeans and a $400 pair and hold them side by side. They contain the same plant. Roughly 0.7 kg of cotton fiber — about a pound and a half — went into each, and at mid-2026 ICE futures prices (~80–84¢/lb) that fiber cost the factory somewhere between $1.20 and $1.50. Same number for both pairs. Almost the entire price difference happens *after* the cotton, in decisions about fabric, machinery, stitching, who sewed it, and how much the brand decided to charge. So let's add it up, line by line, and see what the multiply-up actually buys.

Cotton: the cheapest part of the story

The raw fiber is almost a rounding error. A standard ~218 kg cotton bale yields denim for roughly 215–225 finished pairs (you'll see "350 pairs a bale" quoted — that's a theoretical zero-waste number, not a real cutting room). And raw cotton is only ~40–50% of the *fabric* cost anyway; spinning the yarn is another ~20–25%, and weaving and finishing the rest.

Here's the part that kills the marketing: upgrading to "premium" cotton — Supima, Egyptian, organic, long-staple — adds only about $2 per pair of fiber cost. When a brand charges you a big premium for "premium cotton," roughly $2 of that is cotton. The rest is something else, and it's worth knowing what.

Fabric: the single biggest lever

This is where the gap really opens. Basic ring-spun denim runs about $3–$5 a yard. Mid-grade selvedge is $8–$15. Premium Japanese selvedge, once you include shipping and tariffs, is $20–$40 a yard.

But yardage *per pair* swings too, and most people never hear about it. Mass-market denim is woven wide — 60-inch-plus bolts on fast projectile looms — so a single pair needs only ~1.5 yards. Selvedge is woven on narrow 28–32" shuttle looms, so the *same* pair needs ~3 yards. Double the fabric, at four-to-six times the price per yard.

Run the numbers:

  • Mass-market: ~1.5 yd × ~$6 ≈ $9 of fabric
  • Japanese selvedge: ~3 yd × ~$20 ≈ $60 of fabric

That ~$50 swing, by itself, explains the *majority* of the distance between a ~$75 jean and a ~$300 one. Not the buttons. Not the brand patch. The cloth.

The loom: why slow costs money

Why is selvedge fabric so expensive to weave? Speed. A shuttle loom runs about 130–150 picks per minute. A modern projectile or air-jet loom runs 600–1,000+. So the selvedge loom is roughly 5–10× slower, spreading its fixed costs over far fewer yards — and these are often decades-old Toyoda or Draper machines that someone has to keep alive.

One honest caveat, because we're allergic to denim mythology: selvedge is about the clean self-finished edge and the character it develops, not inherent durability. A heavy non-selvedge denim can outlast a selvedge one. You're buying edge finish and fade potential, not extra years.

Hardware and construction: small money, big consequences

The zipper, rivets, shank button, thread and bar-tacks come to about $3–$5 at the factory. Tiny in absolute terms — but the $3-versus-$5 difference maps almost exactly onto whether the zipper jams within a year and whether the rivets pop. It's the cheapest place a brand can quietly downgrade.

Construction is the other tell. Better jeans use chain-stitched (single-needle) seams and hems on stress areas — that's what produces the prized "roping" fade down the outseam. It's slower and needs a more skilled operator. Cheaper jeans lean on faster lockstitch and overlock. Labor: the part everyone gets wrong

Here's the uncomfortable truth. The wage gap is enormous and real — Bangladesh's statutory garment minimum wage (Dec 2023) is 12,500 taka, about $113/month, versus comparable US apparel labor near $1,864/month, a 10×-plus gap. That's a genuine moral problem.

But it is *not* why your jeans cost what they do. Direct labor is only about 1–3% of a garment's retail price. Doubling those wages would raise retail by a few percent — pennies on a $75 tag. When a US-made pair costs more, it's because domestic labor runs ~$40/pair instead of ~$2, *and* because making things at home loses offshore scale. A "Made in USA" Levi's line has been reported around $178 — driven by domestic wages and lost scale, not better fabric. Don't let "ethically made" do the work that "expensively made here" is actually doing.

Adding it up: ~$110 versus ~$25

Stack the real costs for a US-made selvedge pair:

Markup: where the counterintuitive twist lives

Apparel runs on keystone (2×) and "keystone-plus" (2.2–2.6×) from cost to retail. The textbook flow: $20 cost → $40 wholesale → $88 retail. Mass-market denim carries 55–70% gross margins — among the highest in fashion.

Now watch what happens at the top. The mass pair ($20–30 cost → ~$75 retail) is roughly a 3× markup. The US-made selvedge pair (~$110 cost → $280–300 retail) is a leaner ~20–27% brand margin. The expensive jean often has a *thinner* percentage markup than the cheap one. You read that right: a lot of the time, the $75 jean is the worse deal on a pure cost-to-price basis.

The bottom line

The cost stack gives you a clean rule of thumb for the price tag in front of you:

  • Above ~$150, you're mostly paying for fabric and construction you can actually verify — the $60 of selvedge, the chain-stitching, the better hardware.
